SHIP IN HALVES
Ends To Be Launched (Special Crspdt. N.Z.P.AJ LONDON, March 23. A big Sunderland dockyard is adopting a revolutionarymethod to cut costs by building two 46,000-ton bulk carriers in halves and towing them to the Tyne river to be joined together. A spokesman for the firm said that by launching the two ends first, the engines can be installed while the fore-ends are on the stocks. By this means the company hopes to save about eight or nine weeks in building time and make a big saving in labour costs.
The ships, worth about £4 million, are being built for a Norwegian firm.
