Labour Govt. Would Withdraw Troops
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 24. The Leader of the Opposition (Mr Kirk) today supported remarks made last night by the Labour member of Parliament for Avon, Mr J. Mathison, that a Labour Government would withdraw New Zealand troops from Vietnam.
“Mr Mathison has expressed quite correctly the policy of the Labour Party,” Mr Kirk said.
“We feel hie expresses also the opinion of the majority of the thinking people of New Zealand.” Mr Mathison told a Labour Party meeting that his party had opposed New Zealand’s
military involvement in Vietnam when the Government decided to send troops—and still opposed this policy. “If we become the Government, we will replace combat troops with people who will help raise the living stan : dards of the Vietnamese people,” he said. Under a Labour government New Zealand would have a striking force operating through the United Nations.
When this force was not required for United Nations use it would be employed in the South-east Asian countries in a peaceful role, he said.
