RACING Ocean Mist Favoured At Whangarei

"The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND. The four-year-old mare, Ocean Mist, is certain to be at very short odds at Whangarei today. She is a candidate for the first leg of the T.A.B. double, the City Handicap.

Ocean Mist, a member of R. C. Verner’s stable at Takanini, scored decisively in the Ohinemuri Cup at Pukekohe last weekend.

After she had been delayed for a late run, Ocean Mist outfinished New Tiki, Earl of Foxwood and 14 others in the Ohinemuri Cup. a mile and three furlongs. She beat New Tiki by half a length. At his previous outing New Tiki was a handsome winner in open company at Tauranga. That makes Ocean Mist’s form look good. In the Ohinemuri Cup, a furlong further than the City Handicap, Ocean Mist carried 7-3. This time she was 8-1, making her the top-weight. Her toughest rivals could be the light-weight, High Voltage, Mis« Angel and Royal Poet, all with 7-7. Apart from failing over six furlongs at Pukekohe last Saturday, Miss Angel has been in excellent form. Her previous five starts gained her a win and three minor placings. Two starts back Mis s Angel, a three-year-old filly, by Final Court from Blue Pennant, finished third to the promising three-year-old Empire King and Marine in the Kelburn Handicap, a mile at Trentham on January 29. A few days earlier she beat Marine narrowly in the Douro Cup, a mile, at Trentham, carrying 8-3. High Voltage, at his last start, ran creditably for sixth in the Ohinemuri Cup. That was only his second start after a short spell, and should have improved him. After being well behind early, Royal Poet finished strongly for fourth in the Ohinemuri Cup, more than two lengths from Ocean Mist. He might not have the early speed over some of his rivals but is hardy with any amount of stamina.

Wilful, which finished third two starts ago to Isfahan and Paralovine at Gisborne, and Felacita, a front runner from Te Rapa, look the best chances among the others. Triple Wyn, a useful stayer from Avondale, and Tamatahi took the best of the field in the second leg of the Champion Hack Handicap. If he ran up to his gallops in training Swift Chick would be dangerous. The weather has been fine and the track should be fast.
