Food Hygiene Advice Given

(New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, March 24. New Zealanders must get over their reticence and complain when they see something which is not in the best interests of food hygiene, Dr. F. A. de Hamel, District Medical Officer of Health, said today.

“The kindness and courtesy shown by most people doesn’t pay. It means that some food premises are getting away with a lot they shouldn’t,” he said.

"When people see something which is clearly wrong they should make a fuss or take their custom elsewhere.” He said he would also like to see those in the food and drink trade given an opportunity to have more technical training in food handling at an advanced level. Dr. de Hamel was commenting on the results of a food premises evaluation survey carried out last year by the Health DepartmentIn the Otago district 1051 Inspections were made in the

25 local authority areas. This covered a large sample from 26 trade groups including eating houses, refreshment rooms, cake kitchens, fish shops, milk depots, licensed hotels and breweries.

In the Otago district an average of 17 demerits were received by each of the premises inspected in the 25 local authority areas.
