CHARGE FOR PARKING
Lower Rate Sought
Dissatisfaction with the charges in the City Council’s parking building was expressed last evening by members of the council of the Automobile Association (Canterbury). They agreed that failure to fill the building was a direct result of the charges.
The council decided to ask the City Council to make a substantial reduction to encourage greater use of the building and relieve pressure on metered spaces. (The present rate is 2s for the first hour and Is for each additional hour.) Mr E. R. Casbolt said it was necessary, to make the building the success it was hoped it would be, to have some incentive for motorists to use it. He felt the fees were rather high and that they tended to deter motorists.
The building had been financed from parking-meter revenue obtained from motorists, and the charges could well be made more moderate.
“While parking is at a flat rate it will never be filled. Until the rate is brought under that for meters I feel the motorists will continue to use the meters,” Mr Casbolt said.
