Imported Flowers Make Their Debut

There was an international flavour at the Canterbury Horticultural Society’s early autumn flower show, which opened in the city yesterday. Many imported varieties of dahlias and chrysanthemums

were on public display for the first time. Some of the new blooms were exhibited by Mr Leo Clark, whose giant pyramid of chrysanthemums dominated the show. Mr Clark also won the society’s highest possible award, the silver guild medal, for one of his exhibits. The judges praised the standard of this year's exhibits. Mr J. Fiecken, judge of the cut bloom section, said the quality was excellent for autumn. Mrs F. U. Quarrell, who judged the dahlias, said the exhibits were unusually good and Mr E. Taylor, judge of the fruit and vegetables, said entries were well up to standard. Entries totalled 653 this year compared to 539 in 1965 and exhibits came from as far away as Palmerston North. Although chrysanthemums dominated the show, dahlias added some bright colours and in the Howden collection, which gained a special medal, there was one bloom from the Wisley experimental gardens in England. The meditation section met with improved response this year and the winner, Slam, featured a white column swathed in faint blue and white tulle.

This is the second autumn show the society has held, and, according to the secretary, Mr J. C. Fraser, it will become a permanent fixture. Mr Fraser described the public response as “very good” and he expects the show to become one of the biggest of its kind in the South Island. The show concludes tonight.
