Big Spender Dead

Mr Raymond Bowcock, one of Australia’s best-known thoroughbred studmasters and businesmen, died in hospital in Sydney on Tuesday after a long illness. Mr Bowcock, who owned the Alabama Stud at Scone, caused a sensation at Trentham last year when he spent 56.000 guineas on four purchases in 17 minutes’ bidding time.

Mr Bowcock paid 20.000 guineas for the eight-year-old mare Pique, in foal to Agricola.

Five minutes later, with a bid of 15,000 guineas, he became the owner of the 11-year-old Pink Pearl, with her chestnut colt foal by Agricola and in foal again to that syndicated stallion. On a diminishing but still a spectacular scale, Mr Bowcock then bought the six-year-old Honeybun with a chestnut foal by Martian II for 10,500 guineas.
