NEW Y.M.C.A. CLASSES
Judo, Square Dancing
Judo for girls and country and western dancing are two new features in the 1966 programme of the Young Men’s Christian Association in Christchurch.
There are two judo classes, for girls from standard 3 to form 11, and form IH to 17 years. The course culminates in self-defence training for girls over 17 and young women.
The girls regarded judo as “just another sport,” and were keen to learn, said the secretary (Mr R. J. O’Kane) “There’s no lifting or straining—it’s all a question of balance.” The instructor, Mr H. Fekkes, who holds a black belt, also teaches judo to boys under 17 and ju-jitsu to a large group of men. A learners’ square and round dancing club will meet at the central Y.M.C.A. building on Tuesday evenings, and at-the Bryndwr Y.M.C.A. on Thursday evenings.
The instructors will be Mr and Mrs A. Shepherd, who recently arrived from Canada, where they were associated with adult and youth organisations in Ontario.
Gymnastics, ballet, table tennis, and basketball are also included in the programme this year, as well as basic phycal education activities. There Will also be club events such as film screenings, concerts, debates, and discussions.
