Another Dolphin

< New Zealand Press Association)

WHANGAREI, March 22. Another dolphin has made its appearance in the Hokianga Harbour. By-passing the seaside resorts of Opononi, Rawene and Kohukohu, the 9ft to 10ft mammal is “sporting” in the black rock pool about six miles up the Waihou tidal river from Horeke, 25 yards from No. 1 highway near the Rahiri settlement terminus.

It was first spotted by Dr. A. A. Brockie, of Umawera, last evening.

It is believed to be a Risso’s dolphin (Grampus griseus), a rather solitary variety seldom appearing in schools. The famous Pelorus Jack of the pre-1912 era was a Risso’s dolphin.

Since early morning, the dolphin haa been the foeal point of hundreds of eyes and cameras. Busloads of school pupils from the Hereke, Rahiri and Okaihau schools and many adults are lining the river banks watching the dolphin as it surfaces every minute or so.
