ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY
Booklet On History Being Compiled A booklet on the early history of the Canterbury Astronomical Society is being compiled by the society’s president (Mr F. P. Andrews) and the editor of its journal (Mrs S. J. Thomas). It was decided to do this while there were still some foundation members in the society. The booklet will describe the history of amateur astronomy in Christchurch, including societies existing before 1948, when the present society was founded. Foundation members and their aims will also be mentioned, with special reference to the moonwatch programme and the Joyce Memorial Observatory. A detailed history of the society since its foundation will also be included. A chapter will be devoted to the circumstances leading to the construction of the Joyce Memorial Observatory, and the uses to which it will be put. Members of the society able to supply information about its history are asked to get in touch with Mr Andrews at 93 Creyke road, or Airs Thomas, at the Mount John University Observatory, Lake Tekapo.
