Bach Motet In Recital

This week’s recital in the University’s lunch-hour series will feature the motet, “Jesu. Joy and Treasure” by J. S ■Bach. Six of the 11 movements are based on a chorale melody which Johcnn Cruger adapted from a secular song in the early seventeenth century. Both simple and highly elaborate versions of this melodyare separated by extended settings of verses from the eighth chapter of the book of Romans.

The whole work is closely knit, thematically and textually, but covers a wide range of emotional contrast.

It is not known whether Bach intended the motet to be sung entirely without accompaniment, but it will be so performed at this recital. Also on the programme are madrigals by English composers. including modern settings by Edmund Rubbra of verses by Thomas Campion. The University of Canterbury Madrigal Singers, conducted by Brian Barrett, will present these works in the University Hall today at 1.10 p.m.
