AUCKLAND PAINTERS
Impact Of Two In Sydney
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY, March 23. Only two of the five Auckland painters at present exhibiting at the Darlinghurst Galleries, King’s Cross, make any serious impact, the “Sydney Morning Herald’s” art critic, Wallace Thornton, wrote today. He said: “Ross Ritchie, a young pop artist who bases his painting style on Leger, can both shock and allure. He uses a charm of patterns and colours to counteract the blatancy of posture of a nude girl and this, together with his skilled disruption cf forms, gives a provocative interplay of idea and mood. “Milan Mrkusich uses strict forms of circles and rectangles in abstracted schemes that have some vagueness of definition and gain some added mystery by their subdued harmonic tones and colours.” The exhibition, believed to be the first of works for sale by New Zealand artists in Australia, opened this week and will be on view for three weeks. Other artists exhibiting are Don Binney, Pat Hanly and Colin McCahon. ’
