Veteran’s Two Good Wins

Fields of 28 competitors in each of the six events faced the starter in an all-day carnival organised by the Canterbury Axemen’s Association at Rugby Park, Kaiapoi, on Sunday. About 40 axemen came from the West Coast, Blenheim and South Canterbury. The secretary (Mr P. Southerwood) said it was intended to make the Kaiapoi carnival an annual event as considerable support had been received from businessmen, park trustees and the Kaiapoi Borough Council. Experience, although handicapped, proved superior in the finials <rf most events; a notable feat being T. Jackson's win in the 10-inch combination chop and placing in the 12-inch underhand chop. Mr Jackson (West Coast) is probably the most experienced axeman in New Zealand, winning his first chop at Otira in 1914 and still competing after 52 years. The 13-inch underhand chop, recognised as the main event of the day, was won by J. Pohio (Kaiapoi) after only ten months in competition. Cups and prizes were presented by the president (Mr G.
