RACING Golden Vanity In Good Trial For Motukarara

Riccarton stables will supply six runners in an eight-horse field for the Peninsula Handicap at Motukarara on Saturday. Two of the more impressive of them in training yesterday were Golden Vanity and Charlborough.

They were on terms and easing slightly finishing a mile in 1.43 4-5, the last half-mile in 51 1-5.

They galloped on the trial grass, and times on this track often flatter the efforts of .even the mediocre horses. But there was obvious merit in the trial by Golden Vanity and Charlborough, which were slow to work up to speed and took 15 seconds for the opening furlong.

A. R. Swanson rode Golden Vanity in the gallop, but, as usual, J. A. Messent will be the race rider. Charlborough had his race rider, G. W. Mein, up.

General Gilbert (J. Kerkvliet) had a slight lead over Early Dawn (Swanson) and Messmaid (Mein) at the end of another good trial over a bit of ground. Early Dawn and General Gilbert started near the nine furlongs and Mesmaid joined in after a furlong. They ran the mile in Imin 43sec and the last half in 50 l-ssec. Messmaid shaped well for a hack, and might do well when switched to a middle distance at Motukarara. Smart Run

Omasong (D. N. Hadfield) was going well alongside Filspar (D. N. Cotvles) and Summer Lad (W. Traecey) after running a mile in Imin 42 4-ssec and the last half in 50sec.

Omasong has a bright chance of winning the Otahuna High-weight at Motuka-

rara. She will be ridden by B. T. Jones. Standout (A. J. Stokes) started near the mile and sped in from the seven furlongs in Imin 28sec. His recent race form has been weak, but this trial raised hopes for a sound run in the Peninsula Handicap at Motukarara. Takatua (N. Cowles) showed fair ability in a solo trial to record Imin 44 3-ssec for his mile, and 50 4-ssec for the last half. Takatua failed over a mile and a quarter at Westport at his last start, but should be more seasoned in his next test at that distance, in the Parkinson Hack Handicap at Motukarara. Fast Sprints Mogambo and Approval, both acceptors for the Kinloch Handicap, the open sprint at Motukarara, showed speed in tests over less ground. Mogambo (M. McCann) reeled off six furlongs in Imin 15 3-ssec, the last half mile in 47 2-ssec. Approval (W. Beck) sprinted half a mile in 48sec, and Time and Tide (B. Cellins) did well for a hack in recording 48 l-ssec. Other gallops:— Six furlongs.—El Beka (Stokes) and We Wood (Traecey) Imin 16 l-ssec, last four 50 3-ssec; Shipmate (Stokes) Imin 17 1-5 sec, last four, 50 3-ssec: Prince Callan (Cowles), Imin 17 3-ssec, last four, 51 l-ssec. Half - mile. Shoshone (Stokes), 51 4-ssec; Barcape (K. Mac Kay), 50 2-ssec; Talic (Tucker), 49sec; Gold Shower

(F. H. Skelton) and Mae Wyne (Low), 51 3-ssec; Coseta (Hadfield) dear of Sirtax (Stechmann), 50 2-ssec; Stageland (Cowles) four lengths Somara (F. H. Skelton), 50 4-ssec: Knight of York (F. H. Skelton) and Geejay (Hadfield), 50sec; Last Dip (Cowles), 50 3-ssee; Kalimera (Edens) clear of Roan Ribbon (Swanson), 49 3-5. i
