MARKET FOR LEAN BEEF

AUCKLAND, March 1. New Zealand producers of lean beef have a ready market in America, according to two executive members of the Western States Meat Packers’ Association.
The general manager of the association, Mr L. B. Liljenquist, and the chairman of the board, Mr A. Guss, said in Auckland today that New Zealand could increase its beef exports to the United States quite substantially without overreaching the quota set by Congress in 1964. The meat packers forecast that beef consumption in the United States would continue to rise and that there was
every possibilitv of the quota being lifted higher with the increase in population. Before World War II the average consumption of beef a person annually was sl)ib, Mr Liljenquist said. It had now doubl’d to 1001 b a year and “it wont be many years retire thev are eating 2001 t a year eacn.”
Messrs Liljenquist and Guss are .vita a group of 35 meat packers and processors touring New Zealand and Australia to learn about the meat and livestock industries. This morning, during an inspection of meat works at Otahuhu, they were surprised by the standards of operation and sanitation. “And we didn’t expect to see grass-i ed cattle of such quality,” nicy said. In Wellington the touring group will visit other works and talk with members of the Meat Baird.
