South Australia averted outright defeat by Victoria on the last day of a Sheffield Shield match in Melbourne yesterday, making 441 for eight in its second innings. South Australia had two century-makers. The young test all-rounder, 1. R. Chappell, appears to have made sure of selection for the South African tour by making 113 in 262 minutes, with 12 fours. N. Dansie made 101 in 153 minutes, hitting 10 fours and a five. It was his 99th Shield ■ game and his 17th Shield century.
