12 Trialists For World Series In Chch. Finals
Twelve members of the squad from which the New Zealand men’s softball team to take part in the World Series in Mexico City will be selected are playing in the John Lennon inter-club national finals at Edgar Mclntosh Park on Friday and Saturday.
Only one of the six competing club s Avon, of Christchurch —does not have a New Zealand trialist in its team. Broadway (Wellington) and the Hutt Valley team, Railways, each contain four squad members.
Half of the players are either pitchers or catchers. The pitchers are W. Massey (Railways), G. Ward (Broadway) and the sole South Islander who will have the opportunity once more to impress the selector (Mr A. J. Whelan), G. Tattersfield, of Dodgers (Dunedin). One of the utility players in the squad, E. Kohlasse. will catch for Auckland Marist and his performance in that position will be compared with two specialist catchers in the squad, P. Clark (Broadway) and T. Nunns (Hutt Valley). Broadway's other two squad
members, W. Henderson (second base) and C. Ward (third base), have each played more than 100 matches for Wellington. K. Barrowman (first base) and A. Leslie (outfield) complete Railways’ quartet in the squad.
Another third baseman in line for national selection is P. Rogers, of Ramblers (Auckland). In addition to Kohlasse. Marist is also represented by the outfield, P. Buffalora. in Mr Whelan’s list of 30 players. The great majority of players who will take part in the finals have played for their respective provinces and the tournament promises to produce a high standard of softball.
