Captain Wants ‘More Effort
“It could easily hare fizzled out and we were pleased there was some excitement,” said the England captain. M. J. K. Smith, after the test at Lancaster Park yester-
day. “We were in trouble in both our innings and until we got on top in the last innings it was a very even and fluctuating match.”
The manager of the M.CC. team (Mr S. C. Griffith) said he thought it was a very good game of cricket. It was always surprising to see such a reverse as New Zealand suffered, but he felt K. Higgs had bowled very well indeed.
“It was a good game, considering that the pitch never had much pace in it,” Mr Griffith said. “The performances of both teams in the first innings were good and we look forward to more
matches as interesting as this one.”
“In the final analysis, it was disappointing from our point of view that we played so poorly in the last innings, after playing very well for three days and a half,” said the New Zealand captain, M. E. Chapple, who also complimented Higgs on his bowling.
“I look forward to more sustained concentration and effort in the remaining tests,” Chapple said. “This was the first fourday game for a considerable time, the first major match
rf er a break. I am certain »e car do well in the remainin'; tests.”
“We were pleased with our performance up to the last period of play. We looked and played like an inter national team until we got into a situation when there was little hope of victory. ” said Mr W. A. Hadlee, chair man of the New Zealand selection committee. “Then we tended to adopt too defensive an attitude. I hope the experience here will be valuable if a similar situation develops in the next two tests.”
