Cricket’s 10 Schemes For Promotion-Relegation

Ten schemes to cater for the problem of promotion-relegation—-some similar, others widely diverse—are to be discussed by the CanterburyCricket Association’s management committee on March 15.

The schemes, which were sought from all clubs and members of the management committee, range from automatic promotion-relegation to the reinstatement of district cricket.

Mr A. E. L. Britton, the chairman of the management committee, who has presented the schemes in a seven-page circular form, made two points: that senior teams competing for championship honours, should carry forward all points earned that season: and that, should “the senior competition be split .. . competition games shall carry on until the last Saturday in March.” The schemes, in brief, are: Scheme A: Senior and second A grades as at present. After seven rounds, groups would be formed of the leading six senior teams, the bottom two senior and leading four 2A teams, and the remaining 2A teams, who would play competitions. Promotion

would be automatic if a 2A team finished first or second in the group comprising the bottom two senior and top four 2A teams. Schemes B, G. and H: Automatic promotion-relegation. Scheme C: Similar to present rule, also requiring junior chibs to provide suitable facilities and standard, in the season before promotion is desired. Schemes D. I and J: Present rule, but supporting district cricket if it should be considered. Scheme E: After seven rounds, the leading six teams play for the senior competition and the remaining two senior teams and the top two 2A teams meet in a competition. The following season’s senior grade shall consist of the six top senior teams and the leading two sides of the four-team sub-competition. Scheme F: That a team should not necessarily be demoted because it comes last However, if it scores less than

30 per cent of the winning team’s points, it should be automatically demoted.

Scheme K: District crickel
