(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, March 1. The possible re-establishment of a regular trans-Tasman passenger and cargo shipping service is being examined in detail bv the Government.
Announcing this in a statement tonight, the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) said: “This is not a matter for snap decision, however.”
He said Government investigation had been going on for some time into the economics of suitable shipping.
Mr Holyoake said a committee had been set up under Cabinet direction to discuss the possibility of re-
establishing the trans-Tasman service with representatives of the Departments of Marine, Tourism, Railways and Civil Aviation.
But,, he said, he was not prepared to make a positive statement about the outcome of the investigations and discussions at this stage because the committee’s report had yet to be brought before the Government.
The Prime Minister emphasised that the regular transTasman shipping service would aid New Zealand’s e'nort trade and tourist industry.
