PARAPARAUMU DEVELOPMENT

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, March 1.

The Town and Country Planning Appeal Board would probably give a decision on the development of Paraparaumu airport on Friday, its chairman, Mr J. W. Kealy, S.M., said today.

Mr Kealy was summing up at the end of a two-day sitting at Paraparaumu over the development of the airport. The appeal arises from a Ministry of Works requirement for the Hutt County Council to make provision for the airport.

Tn his submissions to the hoard today. Mr B. Bornholdt, for the Wellington Regional Planning Authority, said additional airport facilities were needed in the Wellington region:

To meet the needs of the anticipated residential, commercial and industrial growth.

To improve the regularity and reliability of internal airline services.

To ensure the continuity of the operation of a transTasman air terminal within the region.

Mr E. H. Ball, for the Paraparaumu District Council, contended the proportion of international airports in NewZealand was already relatively high. “Are you happy to see Wel-

lington without an Australian service when the Electras are withdrawn,” asked Mr Kealy. Mr Ball replied: “It is not absolutely essential that Wellington has a trans-Tasman service.”

The airport would impair the pleasantness, harmony, and coherence of the area.
