RATES RUSH PROSPECT

City Payments Slower A last-minute rush is in prospect for Christchurch City Council rate payments today before the 5 p.m. deadline to avoid the 10 per cent penalty. Yesterday afternoon £697.668 was outstanding, the council having collected £1,598.348, or 69.61 per cent. At the same date last year, 72.63 per cent of the rates had been collected.

The rate collector (Mr G. Gorrie) could not account for the fact that only £91,664 was paid on Monday, compared with £194,180 on the corresponding day last year. There was £12,600 to come in Riccarton Borough Council rates at mid-afternoon yesterday, by which time 86.2 per cent of the £88,058 levy had been paid. About 97 per cent is usually paid by due date. Both tile city council and Riccarton will accept posted rates bearing today’s postmark without penalty.
