“Faceless N.Z.ers”
Sir, —Dr. L L. Pownall’s remarks on “faceless New Zealanders” are, I hope, more just a reminder of the gogetting end of a philosophical: spectrum, than an exhortation.: The correct spot for the pre-: sent New Zealander on this spectrum, which ranges from lazy-primitive-hedonism, to prevetic - maximum - material-progress-ism, is, we must remember, very much a matter of opinion. Our two great assets are natural (geographical!) beauty, and health. The full enjoyment of both of these quite superb endowments, requires a pattern and tempo of life very different from that of Australia or parts of Europe and America. We (or many of us) want to be simple, contented (not incompatible with responsible and realistic) South Sea islanders, with most of the mod-cons. Who is to say that this is an unreasonable state for poor, old, over-motivated and very much over-exalted, homo sap.— Yours, etc., J. McLEOD. February 28, 1966.
