Lodge Seeks Subsidy

A Government subsidy for the erection of a welfare home for the aged is to be sought by the North Canterbury district of the Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows. If Government approval is given the home will be built on the Lyttelton street site bequeathed to the Christchurch Aged People's Welfare Council for the purpose.

The block is planned to Ire in three sections, an 18-room ambulant wing, a 12-room semi-ambulant wing, and a 20-bed infirm or hospital wing. The block will be known as George Manning House and will be administered by a trust board representing the Manchester Unity, Aged People’s Welfare Council, Christchurch South Rotary, and a Government representative. Lodge Benefits Sickness benefit to new members of lodges in the district is £3 a' week. Life and endowment assurances are available up to £l5OO. Deposits in the members’ savings scheme have increased from £126,000 in 1964 to £148,000 last year. Investments in the same period increased by £26,000 to £128,000. Assets rose from £320,000 to £377,000.
