Alcoholism

Sir,—Whether they admit it to themselves or not, the reason why most adults drink is a feeling of inadequacy. In their frantic search for security, which they mistake for happiness, they snatch at anything which gives them the feeling of belonging in the pack. The church fence-sits, fearing to offend its parishioners and forgetting its role of teaching people how to live. If only people could learn that happiness .is not something you can buy, but only the reflecting back on you of the happiness you have created for others! My pity is for the young, whom we so sadly let down. —Yours, etc., AND WHY? February 7, 1966.
