RAILWAY ENGINES

Replacing Explained (N. 7 Press Association) WELLINGTON, Feb. 9. The complete replacement of steam locomotives by diesel-electric engines for regular North Island services would not be achieved this year, the assistant general manager of railways (Mr I. Thomas) said today. The Wellington branch of the New Zealand Railway and Locomotive Society is running to Waipukurau on Saturday its last steam-hauled chartered special, and its president Mr D G. Hoy, in announcing this, said it seemed likely it could only be a matter of months before steam locomotives in the North Island were completely displaced from regular service. Mr Thomas explained that further diesel-electric engines had to arrive and contracts for more had not yet reached the tender stage. He said that excluding railcars and commuter services, diesel-electric engines now handled 82 per cent of North Island traffic.
