LETHARGIC TAYLOR
Souter Has Easy Win* (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. A disappointing standard of tennis was achieved during a second series of matches between New Zealand and overseas players at Wellington yesterday. The top New Zealand player, L. A. Gerrard, was denied a singles match when his opponent, P. Rodriguez. could not play. Two of the four doubles matches were each confined to one set though the players had plenty of time to play the matches out before travelling by air to Christchurch late this afternoon. A lethargic R. Taylor (England) offered little resistance to J. B. Souter (Wellington), who dictated the terms and won in two sets. Results:— Men's Singles.—J. B. Souter (Wellington) beat R. Taylor (England), 6-3, 6-2; R. N. Hawkes (Wellington) lost to .1. Gisbert (Spain), 6-0, 4-6, 4-6; B. E. Fairlie (Auckland) beat 0. Parun (Wellington), 4-6, 6-4, 7-5. Women's Singles.—Mrs E. Stephan (Auckland) lost to Miss K. Melville (Australia), 1-6, 4-6: Miss S. Clement (Auckland) lost to Miss A. Jenkins (Australia), 6-4, 4-6. 5-7: Miss M. Greenwood (Wellington) beat Mrs M. Rodriguez (France). 6-2, 7-5: Miss M. Kent (Wellington) lost to Miss M. Pryde (Wellington), 3-6, 3-6. Men's Doubles. —L. A. Gerrard (Auckland) and Fairlie lost to Taylor and Gisbert, 4-6, 2-6.
