Monowai Retains Dustin Cup
Two Canterbury club teama, Monowai and Avon, finished first and second respectively In the women's softball zone tournament for the Dustin Cup at Blenheim during the week-end.
Monowai, which has won the cup for the last five years in succession, went through the tournament undefeated, and only had nine runs scored against it in the five games played. Avon tied with Walroa (Blenheim) for second place, but won the play off. 12-11, after an exciting struggle. Monowars B. Makinson fin ished the tournament with a total of 2S strike-outs. She was well aided by a good fielding side. A pleasing feature nt Monowai’s games was the stronger batting. All players hit the ball with power and determination, and its greater experience showed in all of Its games.
Avon, with only two really seasoned tournament players in its ranks, played solid softball throughout and fully deserved to take the runner-up's position which entitles it to proceed to the second round at Dunedin. To single out any player would be unfair, as the side played as a team throughout. The team gained confidence as the tournament progressed. Results:
