RECLAIMING WASTELAND
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter) HONG KONG. North Vietnam is reclaiming wasteland in its mountainous regions, the New China News Agency reports. About 280,000 people have recently left their homes in the plains for reclamation work in the mountains. The settlers have formed more than 1300 agricultural co-operatives and brought 240,000 hectares of wasteland under cultivation. Most of the co-operatives have not only become self-sufficient, but have been able to sell surplus grains to the state.
