“OPERATION TIMBRES”
Friendship With France, Belgium
More than 10,000 foreign stamps have been sent from Christchurch to schools and colleges in France and Belgium in the last week or two. They have gone under the auspices of the New Zealand Rifle Brigade’s “Operation Timbres,” a scheme for sending gifts of stamps to schools and colleges in towns where the New Zealand Division appeared.
The organiser, Mr J. K. Moloney, said the gifts were intended to help foster links of friendship among the three countries.
Through links the Rifle Brigade has forged with the Abbe Giloteaux, a former Mayor of Le Quesnoy, have come manyrequests for pen friends in and, information about New Zealand.
Mr Moloney said a small committee will be formed soon to look into ways and means by which several New Zealand institutions can “adopt” schools and colleges in France.
He said the public response to a radio appeal for stamps made on a recent Sunday had been most encouraging. “We will accept any stamps in any condition except naturally those of France and Belgium,” he said.
