Farm Workers Wages
Sir, —This week’s report of. a wage claim for £3 9s 3d a week extra for farm workers brought a ray of hope to many farm workers. It is time that
something was done about their deplorable wages. A married farm worker is expected to live on approximately £l4 a week, while his town cousin, sometimes half his age can make double or more. If a city worker works overtime it is added to his pay packet, but rarely so with the farm worker, who at harvesting, lambing, and baling times can work two weeks in one. The sooner overtime rates are compulsory the better and then we may also be able to afford some of the luxuries that the farmer’s wife often enjoys. Look at it this way: when a farmer sells his stock and grain doesn’t he demand the best prices? The farm worker has only his labour to sell, so why also should he not demand the best prices?—Yours, etc., INCENTIVE PLEASE. January 28, 1966.
