Freight Charges

Sir,—The continual claims by various shipping company directors recently, that an increase in freight rates is necessary, are amusing to anyone at all well informed on shipping. The most vocal companies are those most heavily loaded with “top brass.” The Vestey and Cunard groups—which run the most efficient and clean ships trading to New Zealand —have made little comment. I have, within recent months, worked on one ship owned by one of these groups, as well as on a ship owned by one of the more vocal groups. The latter ship, though newer and better equipped, was dirty and her gear was in a shocking state. She was typical of ships run by this company and other companies in the same group. The sooner overseas ties are cut and this company is allowed to function as a wholly New Zealand company the better for its ships and New Zealand.—Yours, etc., SEAGULL. January 28, 1966.
