Still Evaluating Report On Jets
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, January 28.
The Government was awaiting the Civil Aviation Department’s evaluation of the National Airways Corporation’s recommendations on the type of jet aircraft to replace its Viscount turbo-prop airliners, the Minister of Civil Aviation (Mr McAlpine) said tonight.
The N.A.C. report, of about 200 pages, was given to the Minister last October. The final-decision on the choice of aircraft will be made by the Government. The chairman of directors of N.A.C. (Sir Andrew McKee) has said that new aircraft would not immediately replace the Viscounts but would supplement them on the main trunk for an indeterminate period, after which the Viscounts would be phased out and further jet aircraft brought into service. Earlier this week Mr McAlpine met the British Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Aviation (Mr John Stonehouse). The British Aircraft Corporation’s 1-11 is a leading contender for the N.A.C. service. Mr McAlpine said today that he had no comment to make on his discussions with Mr Stonehouse.-
