The Leader of the Opposition (Mr Kirk) left Wellington early yesterday morning to visit the Chatham Islands, which are in his electorate. He flew to the island by Sunderland flying-boat, and will return on Tuesday.—(P.A.)
Mr D. S. Gower, district chief draughtsman and contract inspector for the New Zealand Electricity Department since 1947, retired yesterday after 40 years’ service. He joined the Ministry of Works as a clerical cadet in Christchurch, and after some time in Greymouth, returned to the electrical branch of the Ministry of Works in Christchurch, having transferred to draughting in 1929. Dr. R. A Falla, director of the Dominion Museum, has been appointed chairman of the Nature Conservation Council. Other members appointed for three years are Dr. J. T. Salmon (Wellington), Messrs T. W. Preston, A. J. Scott (Christchurch), J. Te H. Grace (Wanganui), J. Seabrook (Auckland), and H. W. Smith (Invercargill). Mr J. C. Draper has been appointed a member of the Hororata Domain Board. He replaces Mr A. G. Chapman, who has resigned.
Mr F. L. Bailey has been appointed a Government representative on the Canterbury Raspberry Marketing Committee. He replaces Mr J. H. Watt. Mr H. S. Orr has been appointed a director of the State Advances Corporation.
