NO HELMET
Fiedler Will Get Badge
It is unlikely that Mr Arthur Fiedler, noted amateur fireman and professional conductor, will be given a helmet when he visits the Christchurch Fire Station on Monday.
“He’ll get a badge, but a helmet, no,” said a brigade spokesman. “They cost about £9 each. We haven’t got any of the old brass ones left except one, which is a museum piece.” Mr Fiedler, conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra, is in New Zealand to conduct the N.Z.B.C. Symphony Orchestra. He is an honorary member of 116 fire brigades, and has a collection of 30 firemen’s helmets and 110 badges. He will visit the Christchurch Fire Station at 10.30 a.m. on Monday, and will be shown the equipment.
“Mr Fiedler has a genuine interest in fire appliances, and if he wants to jump on one of the machines, we will lend him a helmet,” said the spokesman. In Wellington last week Mr Fiedler was given a brigade badge, taken for a brief ride on an engine, and became an honorary brigade member.
