Fighting Irish Seamen In Court
CN.Z.P.A. Reuter — Copyright) WATERFORD (Eire), Jan. 23. Irish trawlermen fought a battle of the Irish Sea with stones, bottles and lumps of coal when Northern boats tried to fish the Southern herring beds, a court at Waterford was told.
One southern Irish trawler skipper, Michael Orpen, of the Ardent, was sent for trial, accused of maliciously damaging the Northern trawler, Victory.
Four other Southern Irish fishermen were cleared of charges arising from the incident. Nine other men will appear in court today.
The sea battle wa illuminated by a searchlight a a light was turned on th Victory, said the prosecutoi Ship Rammed Five trawlers boxed in th Victory and there were shout of “Go home to your Queen, “Go home and draw the dole as the Ardent rammed th Victory. The Victory was renderei incapable of fishing, said th skipper, Mr William McKee. The Victory was trying t fish off the coast of Count Wexford after an order fror the Dublin Government tha Northern trawlers could tak herrings from the Southen waters under a five-yea agreement.
