TROTTING Flying Over Picked In Washdyke Ist Leg

One of Flying Over’s best staying runs could give him victory in the John Hole Memorial Flandicap at Washdyke tomorrow.

This race is the first leg of the T.A.B. double on the first day of the Timaru Trotting Club’s summer meeting. Mr D. N. Forde’s Flying Song gelding has not won a race this season but he went very close in two starts at the New Zealand Cup meeting in November.

At that fixture he was second twice —beaten half a neck by Southern Song over two miles on the second day and he ran Trysail to a head over 13 furlongs on the first night. Meantime Southern Song and Trysail have both won again but Flying Over has been unplaced in two starts. At his latest attempt—in the Rangiora Cup—he lost a chance of at least running into a place by breaking at the start.

Flying Over is one of 15 runners which will start from the limit. It seems likely that his strongest rivals will come from among those handicapped on the same mark.

Legendary, a sound third in the Plumpton Stakes at Addington Raceway last Saturday night, and Moutere Bay, which finished third in the Mobile Stakes on the same course on Monday will both have solid backing. That was Legendary’s third minor placing from her last four starts. Moutere Bay has two wins and five minor placings on his record from nine starts for the season.

Copper Flame and Pop's Donation, first and second over two miles at Ashburton last month, and Powerful Light, which ran an improver’s race for fourth in the Plumpton Stakes last Saturday night, could be the best of the others off the front mark. If C. S. Donald decides on a start for Indecision he could also take beating. But much will depend on Indecision’s rehandicap for winning the Plumpton Stakes last Saturday night.

Consistent Loyal Light, which ran well for a third and a second at the Canterbury Park meeting at the week-end, might gain her second win for the season in the Kerrytown Handicap, second leg of the main double, over two miles.

Loya] Light finished third to Lusty Lad and Ingleburn over the same distance in the Summer Handicap last Saturday night. Lusty Lad could be one of Loyal Light’s rivals again but not on the same terms. He, like Epona, a winner at Greymouth on Tuesday night, still has to be rehandicapped for his latest success, Doug’s Choice, which looked badly in need of a race when he failed at Ashburton last month, will have solid backing and might even be favourite. He had been successful in each of his other two starts for the season. Battlefield should also be well up on the list of popular fancies. He has struck a fairly sound patch of form. At Addington last Monday night he was third as a sprinter. Two starts beforehand he was placed over two miles at Ashburton.
