DROUGHT IN FIJI
Sugar Cane Affected
(N.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) SUVA, January 5.
Fiji’s severe drought was seriously affecting the 1966 and 1967 sugar cane harvest, a South Pacific Sugar Mills officiai said today. The steadily worsening drought, which extended over the main islands of Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, had affected the 1 Q 66 crop directly and the amount of seed cane available for planting in April and May for 1967 harvesting would be sharply reduced. Last year's hurricane and floods robbed Fiji of 40,000 tons of raw sugar. A quarter of Fiji’s 400,000 population depends on sugar for their ; livelihood.
Water is being delivered to outlying communities by barge and lorry from Suva, where citizens have been told I they must use as little water las possible.
