FREEZING WORKS
Absenteeism Reduces Kill
A number of slaughtermen failed to return to work at the Islington freezing works on the resumption of killing after the Christmas-New Year holiday break, said the manager of the New Zealand Refrigerating Company Ltd. (Mr W. M. Cleland) yesterday. The absenteeism of keymen, such as slaughtermen, he said, caused yesterday’s kill to drop by more than 1000 lambs to 8000. Mr Cleland said that the drop in the kill was also affected by slaughtermen who returned to work after the holidays yesterday morning but failed to report back for work again in the afternoon. At Islington only three chains were working. Mr Cleland said he hoped the works would be back to normal by today. Most workers turned up at the resumption of killing at the Belfast works of Thomas Borthwick and Sons A’Asia Ltd., yesterday, said the company’s South Island manager (Mr T. C. H. Miller). The Canterbury Frozen Meat Company Ltd had no absenteesim yesterday at its various Canterbury works, said the company’s manager (Mr R. D. Isles). The company had a full day’s kill yesterday at each of its works —Belfast, Fairfield and Pareora.
