CONGESTED PORT

Three Vessels In Stream

The port of Lyttelton was congested yesterday and there was a labour shortage of 570 men when work resumed after the New Year holiday. Three vessels —the Baron Maclay, the Castor and Tarawera—lay in the stream yesterday and more vessels are expected. The Baron Maclay has 4300 tons of phosphate from Florida, the Greek freighter Castor has 2000 tons of potash and the Tarawera has 12,841 cases of Victorian oranges. Vessels idle in port were the Calm, Squall, Kopara. Konini, City of Birkenhead. Katea, Maranui and Port Lincoln. The Holmburn, Maunganui and Arabic were shortmanned.

Sufficient railway waggons were available yesterday but there may be a shortage later in the week while phosphate cargoes are being discharged from the Baron Maclay and the Olivebank, which is expected from Makatea. The Castor’s potash and the Tarawera’s oranges will be moved by road. Only three vessels sailed yesterday. They were the Maori, the tanker British Reliance, and the Union Company’s inter-colonial trader Kaitoke.
