HERMITAGE RAINFALL
Nearly sin. Overnight
(From Our Own Reporter) TIMARU, January 5.
A total of 4.85 in of rain was recorded at the Hermitage between 8 p.m. yesterday and 9 a m. today. The Mount Cook National Park Board’s chief ranger (Mr M. L. Burke) said this evening that the rain had cleared at midday, but strong westerly winds sprung up. A party of four climbers left the Pioneer hut at 2 p.m. to traverse over the Pioneer Pass to Haast hut, he said. There had been quite a rise in all rivers, which would “add to the Waitaki burden.” said Mr Burke.
The approach road to the Tasman airstrip was not negotiable.
