567 CALLS RECEIVED

Emergency Service

Since Christmas Eve, 377 calls for doctors and 190 for dentists have been received by the St. John Ambulance Association.

Twenty-three Christchurch doctors are away on holiday ot present, and the St John Ambulance association is handling all calls for them, giving the addresses of the doctors who are on duty. A similar service is provided for those seeking dental treatment. On a single day, one dentist attended to 34 cases.

About six persons each day, usually with broken spectacles, inquire for an optician. Then there is a large number of miscellaneous calls, some from anxious mothers wondering why their children are late home, some from persons with problems who want to talk them over with someone—generally late at night. “We handle the lot,” an ambulance official said.

Fortunately, he added, there were few false or malicious calls—though persons have dialled 111 for “emergencies” such as toothache or a bee sting.
