WELLINGTON, Dec. 30.
Canterbury enjoyed its best day at the New Zealand men’s provincial softbaU championships being played in Wellington,
Playing off in the third section for the Ed. Barr Cup, Canterbury must be rated first.
In its first game Canterbury easily beait the bottom team, Wairarapa, 12-1, in a five innings game.
R. Lewis was in brilliant pitching form. He struck out two batters while giving up no walks and only one safe hit.
Canterbury impressed in field play and with the bat. I. Pollock continued his fine batting run and other prominent batters were G. Woods, T. Smith and Lewis. A runaway 204) victory in its second game gave Canterbury a wonderful chance for success in this section. This game took five innings. Lewis again impressed as pitcher, giving away only two safe hits. M. Napier stole
the batting honours, driving two mighty hits. P. Joyce also drove a fine home run.
The unexpected defeat of top team, Wellington, by Auckland was the feature of the top section. Hut Valley now leads with seven wins, Wellington is second with six wins, and Auckland is third with five wins.
