The Canterbury B team’s match against Motueka ended in a draw yesterday after the visitors had been set the task of scoring 154 in
93min for victory. When stumps were drawn. Canterbury had scored 116 for the loss of seven wickets.
A feature of the day’s play was the determined batting of J. R. Veitch, who scored a well-compiled century which enabled Canterbury to declare at lunch with four wickets down for 200 in reply to Motueka’s total of 193. Veitch hit 16 fours in his stay of 175 min at the crease. G. T. Barrett was 34 not out. In its second innings, Motueka looked for runs at every opportunity and its sporting declaration with seven wickets down for 160 gave both teams a chance of victory.
Canterbury used nine bowlers in this innings but only J. H. M. Dawson, who took four wickets in four overs, had success.
In its second innings, Canterbury went for the runs with abandon but lost its first three wickets for 22. A forceful partnership of 60 in 40min between A. Harrison and J. W. Burtt promised to give Canterbury a chance, but wickets again fell quick’y and Motueka was on top when the match ended. Results were:
Motueka 193 and 160 for seven declared (M. Heath 49, R. Simpson 33, C. Burrows 20: J. Dawson 4 for 13) drew with Canterbury 200 (J. Veitch 110, J. Mills 28. G. Barrett 34 not out) and 116 (A. Harrison 35; Baker three for 11).
