WASHINGTON, Dec. 30.
The United States had supplied Jordan with between 50 and 100 Patton medium tanks, State Department officials said today.
They said the intention of the now-completed programme was to help Jordan modernise its army. Other small-scale infantry aid was also believed to have been involved in the U.S. assistance.
Officials.declined to give the dollar value of the shipments or the number of tanks.
Mr Abraham Harman, the Israeli Ambassador to the United States, called on the Secretary of State (Mr Dean Rusk) yesterday afternoon to express concern at what he called a recent “acceleration in the pace and scope of the rearmament of the Arab countries.”
After a 45-minute meeting with Mr Rusk, Mr Harman said: “The situation gives us considerable concern.”
