Spent 90th Birthday On 12-Mile Hike
(New Zealand Press Association)
DUNEDIN, Dec. 30.
Mr A. H. Reed celebrated his 90th birthday today by walking from Halfway Bush to Flagstaff (2186 ft and back—the same route he took on his first hike for enjoyment 67 years ago.
At the beginning of today’s 12-<mile hike, Mr Reed invited his companion for the walk, Mr H. Williams, to meet him again on the same spot in 10 years to mark his 100th birthday. Children in dressing gowns ran out of their homes along the route to greet the wellknown figure, and motorists stopped to congratulate him along the route.
Mr Reed said that he had climbed Flagstaff dozens of
times since 1898 but this morning’s hike was his first along the route for “quite a few years." Mr Reed and Mr Williams intended to climb to the top of Flagstaff and to come down again to boil a billy for lunch before walking back to the city early in the afternoon. Mr Reed will take part in the Picton-Blenheim walk on January 3. “But I am not planning any really long walks for the moment,” he said. “I've got too much work to do.”
