Tobias gave such a fine performance at Alexandra Park on Tuesday night that he must be given a great chance of taking the honours in the Great Northern Trotting Derby this evening.

Success for him would halt a run of “outs” in the race for northern horses. Each ' of the last three winners has come from outside the Auckland province. The programme will feature also the Champion Free-For-All and the Rowe Cup, the premier event of the season for trotters in the North Island. Like the Derby, these races have drawn exceptionally good South Island representation. South Island horses m the Champion Free-For-All, the first leg of the double have fared poorly in the luck of the bander draw. Robin Dundee and Orbiter, first and third in the Cup on Tuesday night, are in the seconc row. So is G. B. Noble’s candidate. Garcon d’Or. Gay Robin, the runner-up in the Cup. has drawn No. 11. the extreme outside in the front row. Although horses starting from the second row sometimes get a lucky run, the front-markers undoubtely have an advantage. Auckland’s best pacer, Great Adios, is in this category. He is wide at No. 10, but he has brilliant early speed and is fancied to win. The grand mare, Light Oak, looks a good prospect for the Rowe Cup, the second leg of the T.A.B. double.
