Auckland Inflicts 10-0 Defeat On Canterbury
(New Zealand Press Association)
AUCKLAND.
Auckland continued on its big-hitting way with two wins of 10 or more runs during the third day of the national women s softball tournament at Auckland yesterday. It beat Manawatu, 13-2, and then Canterbury, 10-0, in five innings.
With five rounds played in the Bensel Cup, Auckland is the only undefeated team. Hawke’s Bay has one loss and Wellington and Canterbury two each.
Canterbury gave a good display in the field against Otago in the morning, when it scored a 3-0 win. Good backing was given to the excellent pitching of B. Makinson, who had five strikeouts and conceded only four hits. The best Otago could do was to get one runner to third base. Canterbury’s runs came
from K. McCormick, I. Jones and E. Law.
The powerful hitting of the Auckland team was the winning factor in the afternoon’s game. Auckland opened its scoring with two runs in the first innings on a dropped catch, and then in the fifth innings added eight more runs.
