CATHOLIC TITLES
Martin And Thom Win
(N.Z. Press Association)
WELLINGTON, Dec. 28.
The eight seeded players won through to the quarterfinals in the Catholic tennis championships today, but all enjoyed relatively comfortable wins. The Hamilton intermediate, R. Bird, pushed W. Thom,, of Canterbury, to 8-6 in the first set but Thom gained the ascendancy early in the second set and did not let up. The defending champion, R. Wong, of Auckland, did not have things entirely his way and the wily J. McNeill, of Petone, won applause for some fine play. In the quarter-finals Wong will play R. Keenan, P. Fyfe will meet K. O’Carroil (Northland), P. Kelly will play Thom and J. Martin will meet the second seed, N. Munro.
