WEATHER IN ALPS BAD
Climbers Await Improvement
(From Our Own Reporter/ TIMARU, Dec. 27. After adverse weather in the Mount Cook region of the Southern Alps during the week-end, at least two days of fine weather would be needed to ensure reasonable climbing conditions, a Mount Cook National Park Board ranger (Mr P. F. Boswell) said today. Westerly conditions prevailed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, and, as far as was known, no climbing was carried On Boxing Day, I.3in of rain fell at the Hermitage. Southerly conditions were experienced, and it sno"ed on Sunday night, and there was light snow in the area yesterday. Mr Boswell said there were fewer climbers in the region compared with previous years. At the Plateau hut, which is the main base for "ascents of Mount Cook, there are 21 climbers, including 13 Japanese in two parties. Fifteen mountaineers are sheltering in the other huts.
A party of four is at park board headquarters, waiting to be flown to Franz Josef glacier. The climbers who are from Lower Hutt, are planning a trip to the western side of the Franz Josef glacier to Mount Spencer and Mount Burster.
